Private day with driver-guide: my test

Review: private day

My verdict: seven hours, a vehicle and a guide just for you, pickup included in Beaune or Dijon, two tastings with up to ten wines, both Côtes, a walk through the vineyards and a meeting with a winemaker at a small estate. It’s the most flexible of the six options, and the only one where you can request to spend more time at Clos de Vougeot.

The itinerary, step by step

Since the tour is private, the program is flexible. Here’s the announced outline.

What you can request when booking, with no guarantees: a longer stop at the Clos, a detour to Cîteaux Abbey about ten kilometers to the east, or adding a visit to the château during the day. Ask the operator before paying: the château’s ticket office has its own schedule, and guided tours must be booked separately.

Generally included

  • Private vehicle and driver-guide for seven hours
  • Pickup and return in Beaune or Dijon
  • Two tastings, up to ten wines
  • Meeting with a winemaker at a small estate
  • Guided walk through the vineyards
  • Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits in the same day

Not included

  • Lunch, to be arranged and paid for on the spot
  • Entry to the Château du Clos de Vougeot
  • Wine purchases
  • Tips

What works

  • Flexible program: pace, stops, walk duration
  • Pickup included in both Beaune and Dijon
  • Wheelchair accessible
  • French and English
  • Up to ten wines, premiers and grands crus
  • Rating of 4.9, the best tied with the day with fourteen tastings

Good to know

  • Only 32 reviews: a small sample, even if the rating is excellent
  • Lunch not included
  • Seven hours: a full day
  • The château does not open longer for a private group: entry must be booked separately
  • Special requests can be negotiated at booking, with no guarantee

Who it’s for, and who it’s not for

For you if you are four or six and want to decide your own day; if someone in the group needs an accessible vehicle; if you’ve already done a group tour and this time want to spend more time with fewer winemakers; or if you want a long stop at Clos de Vougeot to understand why the top of the Clos, on the slope near the château, doesn’t have the same reputation as the lower part, which is more clay-rich — I’ve expanded on this point in the Clos de Vougeot wine.

Not for you if you’re traveling alone or as a couple and meeting other travelers is part of the fun: the small-group day covers a similar program. Nor if you only have half a day: check out the Côte de Beaune in four hours.

What travelers say

«Paul, a very professional driver, took us to estates we would never have found» — Erin, United States, May 2026

«Maxi knows everything about wine and Burgundy» — Baohong, China

«Everything was as booked, excellent car, Hubert highly recommended» — Jose Eduardo, Brazil

«Joachim, over 30 years of experience» — Gerardo, United States

Scott, from the United States, mentions deep knowledge made digestible, and Andrew praises very nuanced commentary on Burgundy. What stands out in these reviews is that the quality of the day depends more on the driver-guide than the program: four different first names are mentioned, all positively, which is reassuring about the team. With 32 reviews, it remains a modest sample.

Field tip

Write your requests in the comment box when booking, not on the morning itself: a meeting with a winemaker is arranged in advance, and a visit to the château depends on the ticket office’s availability.

Frequently asked questions

Can I request a visit to the château during the private day?

You can ask the operator when booking, but nothing is promised on the listing: entry is not included and the château’s guided tours have fixed schedules. The option that includes entry is the lunch at La Table de Léonce.

Is pickup really included?

Yes, in Beaune or Dijon, both ways, with a return announced around 17 h 30. This is the only option in this selection to cover both cities; the others depart from a fixed point, see all visits.

Is lunch included?

No. It’s arranged with the driver-guide and paid for on the spot, as with the day with fourteen tastings. To dine within the château walls, it’s La Table de Léonce.
