Private day with driver-guide: my test
My verdict: seven hours, a vehicle and a guide just for you, pickup included in Beaune or Dijon, two tastings with up to ten wines, both Côtes, a walk through the vineyards and a meeting with a winemaker at a small estate. It’s the most flexible of the six options, and the only one where you can request to spend more time at Clos de Vougeot.
The itinerary, step by step
Since the tour is private, the program is flexible. Here’s the announced outline.
- Pickup. At your accommodation or agreed meeting point in Beaune or Dijon. This is the only option in my selection where transfers are included from both cities.
- The Côte de Beaune. First part of the day in the south, with a guided tasting.
- The Côte de Nuits. Travel up the Route des Grands Crus, with stops at key locations: the Romanée-Conti plot in Vosne-Romanée and Clos de Vougeot, viewed from the vineyards.
- The walk through the vineyards. A moment the driver-guide schedules based on the weather and your preferences, unlike group tours where the time is fixed.
- The small estate. Meeting with a winemaker at their domain. Across the two tastings of the day, you can sample up to ten wines, including premiers and grands crus.
- Lunch. Not included: it’s arranged with the driver-guide and paid for on the spot.
- Return around 17 h 30.
What you can request when booking, with no guarantees: a longer stop at the Clos, a detour to Cîteaux Abbey about ten kilometers to the east, or adding a visit to the château during the day. Ask the operator before paying: the château’s ticket office has its own schedule, and guided tours must be booked separately.

Who it’s for, and who it’s not for
For you if you are four or six and want to decide your own day; if someone in the group needs an accessible vehicle; if you’ve already done a group tour and this time want to spend more time with fewer winemakers; or if you want a long stop at Clos de Vougeot to understand why the top of the Clos, on the slope near the château, doesn’t have the same reputation as the lower part, which is more clay-rich — I’ve expanded on this point in the Clos de Vougeot wine.
